Panerai

Panerai for Purdey - Panerai What's makes the Panerai Watches priceless? Let's brief you about the history of the Panerai watch ! Giovanni Panerai was the founder of the family business. He opened the first watchmaker's shop in Florence on the Ponte alle Grazie and launched this brand by getting in touch with the most prestigious and longest established Swiss watch manufacturers. His grandson, Guido Panerai gave this business a new look and specialized in high precision mechanisms, becoming the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy.

Thus began the period of Panerai ! The luxury Italian watch brand is famous for its Radiomir and Luminor watches. The earlier Panerai watches were characterized by their large size. As the makers wanted it, the watch has a strong personality. The watch epitomizes a history of value, a history of a man, and a history of a hero. Panerai watches boast of a good content and design. History, creativity and originality constitute a Panerai watch.

Panerai watches are widely segregated under the genres, historic, contemporary and special editions. The special editions, every year are a rage.

Historic

The Radiomir line was the first Panerai watch. Created in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy the Radiomir is distinctive for its large size and water-resistant case, the legibility of the dial in immersion, its robustness in extreme use conditions, and its reliable movement.

The 8 Days model, a return to the past, makes the Radiomir collection a rarity with the re-presentation in a modern key of a mechanism which Officine Panerai has already experimented with, the hand-wound 8-day movement with a Jaeger-LeCoultre base.

The Luminor Base watch models were created to suit the needs of the Navy. Launched in the early 1940s they were sturdy, readable under water, and "dependable".

The Luminor Marina watch models are the initial of Panerai models in the 1940s. They are neatly characterized with an 8-day Angelus movement, with the small seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position. This is an exclusive feature of the Panerai watch, along with luminous hour markers and Arabic numerals at the quarters. Left handed versions of this watch are also quite interesting, wherein the winding crown and the device protecting the crown are on the left side of the case and the small seconds dial at 3 o'clock.

Contemporary

Radiomir Chrono, Radiomir GMT/Alarm, Luminor GMT, Luminor Submersible, Luminor Power Reserve and the Luminor Marina Automatic fall under the contemporary class of Panerai watches! Innovative features such as, a smaller case, 40m in diameter, the use of the chronograph function and an exclusively designed Luminor chronograph case, in which the push-pieces are integrated into the device protecting the crown in total respect of the aesthetic of the historic watch and the use of a titanium-steel combination for the case parts and the links of the bracelet of the Panerai Luminor Chrono. All these features make the contemporary collections classy!

Special editions

The first special edition Panerai watch was in the year 1995. Slytech was created on the request of Hollywood actor, Sylvester Stallone (Sly was his nick name). He requested for a special edition named Submersible during the shooting of the movie Daylight.

The Radiomir 47 mm period Rolex movement platinum was launched as a Special edition in 1997. 1998 saw the Luminor Marina Militare caliber Panerai OP II Titanium. Until the recent special edition – Luminor Power Reserve Regatta 2005 caliber Panerai OP IX Steel and the Luminor Sealand Jules Verne caliber Panerai OP III Steel, Panerai seems to make a special place on people's wrists and hearts with their special editions. 2005 also launched the first Panerai in-house movement, the caliber P.2002. This is a hand-wound mechanical movement of the latest technical conception with 8 days power reserve.

Whether old or new, original, Panerai models are difficult to find, thus making the Panerai a priced possession for a collector.
